The Cedar Coast Field Station (CCFS) is an independent, not-for-profit society with a vision to preserve ecological health through place-based research and education that celebrates the cultural and biological diversity of Clayoquot Sound, a UNESCO Biosphere Reserve.
A message from the board:
Over the past season, CCFSS has undergone some changes. In 2022, we carried out a number of research projects in Clayoquot Sound – such as juvenile salmon monitoring – and this work continues in the 2023 season. We were very busy with school groups and summer science camps and hosted a record number of visitors.
Going forward, the facility on Vargas Island is not available for our full time use and we will not be hosting groups this season. We do have an agreement with Cedar Coast Art and Ecology Centre who is now in the facility and they are collaborating with us to share our educational programming with visiting school groups. We are exploring options to continue to share our programming with the community – watch for us this season at the Tofino Public Market at the Village Green!
This year, our focus will remain on continuing our research and monitoring projects, which are multi-year collaborations with a variety of organizations.
As mentioned, Cedar Coast Art and Ecology Centre is the new accommodation facility on Vargas Island, which is run by our founder and past board member, Simon Nessman. Simon and CCAE are supportive of the vision and mission of Cedar Coast Field Station Society and we look forward to collaborating further.
